Turkey’s Regional Export Data in 2019

As of January 2019, Turkey has started to announce its economic data according to the General Trade System. While sales that are made from free zones to foreign countries were not included in the export data according to Private Trade System, with the General Trade System they are now being included in the export data.

According to the data announced by the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), the total export value of Turkey was 180.4 billion dollars in 2019.

We had analyzed the total export figure according to the General Trade System on a sectoral basis in our earlier blog article.

In this article, however, we are going to analyze the total export figure in 2019 on a regional basis. In other words, we are going to analyze that which regions Turkey's exports were concentrated in 2019, and the change in exports figure by regions from 2018 to 2019.

First of all, we would like to indicate that the figures of bonded warehouses and free trade zones within the boundaries of Turkey and the figures of exports exempted from registered exporters associations are not included in the regional export figures which are announced by the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM). The Free Zones in the table below involve the Free Zones in other countries.

When analyzed the top three regions in the table above; we see that the European Union countries have the highest export value in Turkey’s export in 2019. Although the Export of Turkey to the EU countries decreased by 0.93% compared to the previous year, the EU countries are still at the top of the list in Turkey’s exports. The total export figure that Turkey made to these countries in 2019 was at the level of 82 billion dollars. The share of the export to the EU countries forms 49.5% of total exports.

The Middle East countries are ranked in the second place of the list. The export to the Middle East countries has risen by 7.73% to 26 billion dollars in 2019. This figure formed 15.7% of total exports in 2019.

In the third place, we see African countries. The total export figure that Turkey made to African countries in 2019 was at the level of 15 billion dollars. It is seen that the export to African countries has risen by 8.4% compared to the previous year. The export share of this region in total exports was 9.35% in 2019.

According to the regional export data announced by the Turkish Exporters Assembly, the biggest increment by volume was the exports which were made to the Middle East region. Being geographically close to the Middle Eastern countries is advantageous for Turkey in terms of logistics costs and delivery time. It is seen that the government promotions for the exports towards the Middle East countries have also an influence on this increment.

Looking at the ratio, we see that the region which has the biggest increment ratio was the Commonwealth of Independent States by 16.5% in 2019. The Commonwealth of Independent States consists of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Moldova, and Armenia.
